The New 35 mm Full-Frame Image Sensor Camera Offers High-Resolution Imagery with a Compact Body, Remote Operation, and is Compatible with the Sony Camera Remote Software Development Kit (SDK) Sony Electronics Launches Ultra-Lightweight, E-mount Interchangeable Lens Camera for Industrial Applications, the ILX-LR1 The new Sony ILX-LR1 will be available in late November 2023 with an MSRP of $2,950. The ILX-LR1 has a single UHS-II SD card slot, a USB-C port and a micro-HDMI port. The Power and Control Terminal allows for complete remote operation of the camera, including image capture, focus control and more. The camera does not have a battery and accepts DC power for long, continuous operating time. The Sony ILX-LR1 measures 10 x 7.4 x 4.25cm (3.9 x 2.9 x 1.7 in.) and features a radically different set of physical features compared to a traditional Sony Alpha camera, including screw points on all surfaces to help with various mounting options. There certainly appears to be an opportunity to incorporate the ultra-compact ILX-LR1 for creative endeavors, especially drone cinematography. The Sony's full-frame sensor offers a significant resolution increase for stills.

Meanwhile, the Sony ILX-LR1 seems more focused on the industrial imaging market rather than cinema and other creative pursuits. These cameras borrow heavily from the GH5S and S1H respectively, so lean heavily towards video and high-res streaming.

The ILX-LR1 is reminiscent of the Panasonic LUMIX BGH1 and BS1H box cameras, with their screenless design and purpose-built focus on drone or other remote-shooting applications. Offering up to 4K UHD video at 60fps and support for S-Log3 Picture Profile, the ILX-LR1 could also be an ideal choice for live streaming event coverage, multi-camera remote shooting and other video applications where space is limited or an angle is suitable for mounting.

The maximum continuous shooting speed is also limited to just 3fps compared to the 10fps of the a7R V.Īlthough Sony is marketing the camera more as a utilitarian stills camera to be used in workplace applications, such as drone-based land surveying and inspection of large industrial installations like TV and radio towers, the camera also offers an array of high-resolution video features. Unlike the larger a7R V, however, the ILX-LR1 lacks any in-body image stabilization, but will support lenses with optical image stabilization.

Powered by a 61-megapixel full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR image processor, the new ILX-LR1 offers the same fantastic image quality performance that we see from the a7R V, including excellent resolving power, wide dynamic range, and a broad ISO range spanning 100-32000 (native). The new ILX-LR1 takes the guts and the imaging pipeline of the Sony a7R V and squeezes it all into a tiny box-shaped camera body that makes it ideal for use with drones, live streaming, industrial imaging, remote event coverage and other LAN-connected camera applications. The relatively tiny Sony ILX-LR1 weighs approximately 243g (0.54 lbs.) and lacks any sort of built-in EVF or rear screen.

Sony's announced a new full-frame E-mount mirrorless camera, but not in the form factor you might be expecting.
